Born at Bara Pind Lohtian in Shakargarh Tehsil, Shiv Kumar Batalvi wrote a romantic poetry of heightened passion, pathos and the lover's agony that has never lost its hold on Punjabi readers. His first anthology, Peeran Da Paraga, appeared in 1960. Loona (1965), a verse play retelling the Puran Bhagat legend from Loona's side, won him the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1967 — at the time the youngest writer ever to receive it. He died at thirty-six.

Kitaab Kosh exists to put Punjabi literature back within arm’s reach — the poetry, the history, the novels and the new voices — for readers wherever they happen to live.
Punjabi is spoken by well over a hundred million people and written in two scripts, and yet a reader outside Punjab often cannot find a copy of Marhi Da Deeva without a favour from a relative. That gap is the whole reason for this shop.
What we care about
- The language. Every book is listed in Gurmukhi as well as English, and search works in either.
- Preservation. Classics stay in the catalogue even when they sell slowly.
- Authors. Books are bought from recognised publishers so that royalties reach the people they should.
- Discovery. Every title carries a note explaining why it is worth your evening.
- Readers everywhere. Punjab, Canada, the UK, Australia, the Gulf, the United States.
What we are not claiming
This is a demo build. It makes no claim to be the largest, oldest or most complete Punjabi bookstore anywhere, because none of that has been verified. Every operational promise on this site — shipping times, stock, payment security — is marked as something the store owner must confirm before launch.
On the artwork
The book covers and ornaments on this site are original artwork generated for the demo: Gurmukhi typography, a phulkari-inspired lattice, manuscript rules and rosettes. No publisher cover scans, author photographs or third-party images are used. Everything is drawn in CSS and SVG, which is also why the pages load as fast as they do.

Both. Most of the catalogue is Gurmukhi; Shahmukhi titles are labelled on the card and filterable in the shop. A few titles about Punjabi subjects are in English and marked as such.
How does search handle Punjabi?
Type in either script. Queries are transliterated and folded to a common key, so “Shiv Kumar”, “ਸ਼ਿਵ ਕੁਮਾਰ” and “shiv kumaar” all reach the same author.
